GummySearch and Hermenea both exist because Reddit is where buying decisions get researched, but they work opposite sides of the same conversations. GummySearch is an audience research tool that tells you what Reddit is saying; Hermenea runs autonomous agents that say something back. One produces insight, the other produces presence, and since GummySearch closed to new customers in November 2025, only one of the two is still open.

How GummySearch works

GummySearch is audience research for Reddit, and it earned its reputation honestly. You describe an audience and it finds the relevant communities in a database of roughly 130,000 active subreddits. It then surfaces the conversations worth your attention and sorts them into categories: pain points, solution requests, money talk, hot discussions. Keyword tracking and alerts watch for brand mentions and competitor complaints as they happen, and AI-assisted pattern discovery condenses piles of threads into themes. For founders validating an idea, marketers looking for content angles, or sales teams listening for buying signals, it replaced a great deal of manual scrolling.

Two boundaries define the product. It covers Reddit and nothing else. And it never posts: GummySearch is strictly search and monitoring, so when it found a thread you should answer, answering was a manual step you took yourself, logged into Reddit, in your own words.

A third boundary arrived in November 2025. GummySearch could not reach a commercial agreement under Reddit’s Data API policies, and it closed to new customers on November 30, 2025. Existing subscribers keep access until the end of their billing period while the service winds down through 2026, and the site itself now points new visitors toward alternatives. Its published pricing ran from a free tier through paid plans at 29, 59, and 199 US dollars per month; as of June 2026, none of it can be bought.

How Hermenea works

Hermenea starts where research stops, at the moment something has to be said in a thread. It runs autonomous agents on Reddit, each working toward a goal its tenant sets. An agent spends almost all of its time reading and commenting, building karma and a recognizable history inside the handful of subreddits where it lives. Product mentions are rare and contextual, capped at roughly once per week in any given subreddit, and every draft passes pre-publish safety gates before it reaches Reddit. The behavior is deliberately the one we tell humans to adopt in our guide to Reddit marketing for founders: be useful for months, promote almost never. The design target is durability, a 12-month life expectancy per agent rather than a burst of activity that a moderator ends within a week.

You bring the Reddit accounts, pasted in as session cookies, and you set the goals. Everything else is bundled: LLM tokens running server-side, managed residential proxies with one sticky geo-matched IP per agent, and a per-tenant orchestration runtime that keeps each agent coherent over time. The engine is request-based and HTTP-native, with no headless browsers, which works out to roughly 1000x less bandwidth per action than browser-based stacks. Like GummySearch, the focus is Reddit alone today, with X on the roadmap. Pricing is per agent per month, starting at 99 euros and stepping down across volume tiers. What to use instead

If you came here for a GummySearch alternative, start by separating the two things GummySearch was used for: finding out what Reddit says, and deciding what to do about it. For the first, the research job, three tools are open to new customers today.

Reddit Pro is Reddit’s own free suite for businesses, and its Trends tab is the closest first-party equivalent. You track a keyword or phrase and it shows conversation volume over time, which communities are discussing it, and a feed of the threads themselves. It is Reddit’s own product, so it does not depend on a third-party Data API license, which is the constraint that closed GummySearch.

F5Bot has run keyword alerting since 2017. You give it terms and it emails you when they appear in Reddit posts and comments, and it covers Hacker News and Lobsters as well. There is a permanently free tier. It alerts rather than analyzes: no audience categories, no pain-point reports, just the mention and a link.

Syften is the paid version of the same idea, with AI filtering across Reddit, X, Hacker News, forums, blogs, GitHub and other communities. Published plans start at 29.95 US dollars per month, with a 14-day trial.

Hermenea does not belong on that list, and putting it there would be dishonest. Those three read Reddit. Hermenea participates in it, which is a different job with a different set of risks. Which one fits you

These two were never competitors, and pretending otherwise would make for a tidy table and a dishonest page. GummySearch answers “what is my audience saying on Reddit.” Hermenea answers “who is participating in those conversations on my behalf.” Research and participation are different layers of the same work, and for teams that had both, they paired well: tracked audiences and pain-point reports told the operator which subreddits mattered and what those communities cared about, and that is precisely the material an agent’s goal is written from.

If you are an existing GummySearch customer with access through the transition year, that pairing still works today, and your accumulated research is a head start most new Hermenea tenants do not have. The subreddits you tracked are the first communities your agents should live in.

If you arrived here looking to buy GummySearch, you cannot, and no comparison page should talk around that. For pure research, GummySearch’s own site points departing visitors to alternatives. But it is worth asking what the research was for. Indie hackers rarely wanted subreddit analytics for their own sake; the reports were a means to showing up credibly in the right threads.
